Smack Technologies, a defence technology start-up, has raised $61 million in a Series B round to develop Alpha, a wrist-worn device with a flexible screen meant to put AI-processed battlefield information on a soldier’s forearm. Navy Times reported the round on 1 September. Alpha pairs with Smack’s Omega software, which the company says fuses and analyses multimodal sensor data.
A whiteboard replaced by a screen
Co-founder and chief executive Andy Markoff, a former Marine Raider, framed the form factor around what infantry already carry. “The form factor we’re building replaces what I literally used to wear on my forearm, only here I’m exchanging a whiteboard and grease pencil for a flexible computer screen,” he told Navy Times.
He was blunt about why the company is not building a heads-up display. “If you’ve ever walked in the jungle at night, you know you’d actually rather risk having an eyeball poked out by a tree than wear shooting glasses that fog up,” he said. The argument that a glanceable surface on the body beats optics in front of the eye is one the flexible display industry has made for years without a large customer to prove it.
What exists today
Very little hardware, by the company’s own account. Navy Times reported that Alpha had been in development for about four months, with a working prototype projected within a year and contract potential within two. Neither report we read names a display supplier, a screen size or the display technology, and neither says whether the screen is an OLED or another flexible architecture.
The two outlets also differ on a basic company detail: Navy Times describes Smack as California-based, while The Defense Post describes it as Texas-based. Neither article we read names Alpha’s investors or military customers. The Defense Post says the device is designed to give frontline operators “a real-time view of the battlefield and potential courses of action”, with Omega using proprietary AI models that the company says are grounded in the physics of warfare.
Why it matters for flexible electronics
Military wearables are a demanding test for flexible displays. A forearm-mounted screen has to survive repeated flexing, impact, sweat and temperature swings, stay readable in daylight and at night, and run on limited power far from a charger. Those constraints have kept rugged flexible displays niche in civilian markets. A well-funded product aimed at a defined user would give panel makers a concrete specification to design against, but at this stage Alpha is a funding story, not a hardware milestone.
The money is also largely a bet on software. Much of what Smack describes, sensor fusion and decision support, sits in Omega, and the display is the delivery surface. How much of the $61 million goes to hardware has not been disclosed.
