If you read the e-textiles market literature the way this desk does — as an occupational hazard — you eventually notice something odd. Two reports published within months of each other, both credible houses, put the 2026 smart-clothing market within a rounding error of each other's decade-end forecasts. One says the market is $29.23 billion in 2026. Another says $3.08 billion in 2026.
Both cannot be right. Both, however, can be honestly computed. The difference is what sits inside the word "market" — and unpacking that is a lesson in how to read any electronics forecast.
The six forecasts, side by side
Where the $26 billion gap comes from
Work backwards from the numbers and three definitional choices explain almost all of the spread:
- What counts as "smart" — the wide forecasts include garments with any electronic function, including attachable modules and conventional electronics woven into apparel branding. The narrow ones count only products where the textile itself is the electronic component.
- Value captured — does the figure price the garment at retail, the electronic module at component level, or the textile sensor at material level? A retail-priced smart jacket contributes ten times the revenue of its embedded sensor strip.
- Adjacent markets — some houses fold heated apparel, industrial wearables and medical monitoring garments into the base; others exclude them into separate medical-sensor categories.
Precedence Research's $29.23 billion figure and Business Research Insights' $3.08 billion are not describing different planets. They are describing different boundaries of the same industry — one pricing the whole smart-garment economy, one pricing the electronic-textile component inside it.
Why this matters more than the number
The spread is itself the intelligence. When forecasters agree within 10–15%, the market is well-defined and the consensus is information. When they disagree by 10×, the market is still being invented — category boundaries are unsettled, and the numbers mostly measure each house's definition, not the industry's trajectory. For a materials supplier deciding whether to build conductive-yarn capacity, the narrow forecast is the relevant demand signal. For an apparel brand weighing a smart-clothing line, the wide one approximates the retail opportunity. Neither is wrong; using the wrong one for your decision is.
When two credible forecasts disagree by a factor of ten, the market isn't measured yet — it's still being defined.
The signal under the noise
Strip away the boundary disputes and the directional agreement is actually strong: every house in our comparison shows double-digit growth, led by medical monitoring, industrial safety wear and performance apparel. The technology milestones we track elsewhere in this issue — stretchable circuits shipping in skin-worn products, printed sensors finding volume buyers — are the supply-side reality behind every one of those curves. The honest read: e-textiles is a real, growing industry whose size depends on where you draw the fence. Any single headline number deserves a footnote, and this desk will keep attaching one.
